Manali: what to expect
Manali sits in the Kullu valley on the Beas river at about 2,000 metres, and for many north Indian families it is the default mountain holiday. It is popular for good reason: reachable by road, close to snow in winter and surrounded by adventure options in summer.
The town itself is busy. Most of what makes a Manali trip memorable lies a short drive away, in Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel region and the quieter villages of the Kullu and Parvati valleys.
Who should visit Manali
- Couples and families who want snow or cool summers within a road trip of Delhi or Chandigarh
- Friends looking for paragliding, rafting and treks
- Travellers who want a hill base to add Kasol, Naggar or Spiti
Best time to visit Manali
| When | Conditions | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Mar – Jun | Pleasant, 10–25°C | Peak season; book ahead for May and June |
| Sep – Nov | Clear and crisp | Quieter, good for treks and photography |
| Dec – Feb | Cold, snow in Solang and upper areas | Best for snow; roads can be disrupted |
| Jul – Aug | Monsoon | Landslide risk on approach roads |
How to reach Manali
Manali is about 300 km from Chandigarh and far longer from Delhi, so most visitors travel by road or take an overnight Volvo bus. Bhuntar (Kullu) has a small airport roughly an hour away with limited flights.
The Atal Tunnel has shortened the route to Lahaul. Rohtang Pass is seasonal and permit-controlled, so check before counting on it.

What affects the cost of a Manali trip
We do not publish a fixed price because it changes with season and choices. These are the factors that move it most:
- Season: May–June and the winter snow weeks cost noticeably more
- Vehicle type: private cab versus shared or Volvo travel
- Hotel location: the Mall versus Old Manali or Naggar
Ask each agent for an itemised quote so you can compare hotels, transport, entry fees and meals separately.
