Spiti Valley: what to expect
Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert on the Tibetan side of Himachal. Villages sit at 3,500 to 4,500 metres around ancient monasteries, and the landscape is more Ladakh than the green hills most people associate with the state.
It is a demanding trip that rewards preparation. Altitude, long road days and limited facilities shape every part of the plan.
Who should visit Spiti Valley
- Adventure and photography travellers comfortable with long drives
- Travellers who want a remote, quiet landscape
- Those with time for at least six to eight days

| Oct | Cold, clear | Shimla-side route is more reliable; fewer crowds |
| Nov – Apr | Extreme cold and snow | For experienced travellers only |
How to reach Spiti Valley
There are two main approaches. The Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza route, via Kalpa and Nako, is open for more of the year. The Manali–Kunzum La route, which passes Chandratal, is seasonal, generally opening in early summer and closing around October.
There is no airport in Spiti. Most travellers use a private vehicle with an experienced driver.

What affects the cost of a Spiti Valley trip
We do not publish a fixed price because it changes with season and choices. These are the factors that move it most:
- Vehicle: a sturdy SUV with driver is the main cost
- Season and road conditions
- Homestay versus hotel options
Ask each agent for an itemised quote so you can compare hotels, transport, entry fees and meals separately.
