How to Plan an International Trip from India

Planning an international trip from India is not hard, but the order matters. A visa can take days or weeks, flights get more expensive as the date nears, and the best hotels sell out first. If you do the right things in the right order, most of the stress disappears.

This guide walks through the steps in sequence, and ends with a timeline you can follow.

The steps, in order

  1. Fix your dates, group size and budget.
  2. Check your passport validity and the validity of any ID you will rely on.
  3. Choose a destination that matches your season and budget.
  4. Check entry requirements and start the visa or digital arrival process.
  5. Book flights, or ask for a quote that includes them.
  6. Book hotels and the main activities.
  7. Buy travel insurance.
  8. Arrange money: cards, forex and a small amount of cash.
  9. Prepare documents, SIM or roaming and your packing list.

1. Dates, group and budget

Start with the dates you can actually take off, the number of people and a total budget. Then look at when the destination is at its best. A destination can be wonderful in one month and wet or crowded in another. For most trips, avoid booking before you have checked the climate for your dates.

2. Passport and documents

  • Most countries expect at least six months of validity beyond your travel dates, and some blank pages.
  • If you are renewing a passport, allow plenty of time before you apply for visas.
  • Keep digital and printed copies of your passport, tickets, hotel bookings and insurance.
  • Carry any ID required for children and senior travellers.

3. Choose a destination that fits

For a first trip, shortlist two or three destinations and compare them on flight time, season and budget. Easy starts include Thailand, Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia. If you cannot choose, ask agents to quote more than one.

4. Visa and entry requirements

Entry rules for Indian passport holders vary: some destinations are visa-free for short stays, some offer visa on arrival, and others need an e-visa or an embassy visa. Rules change often, so check the official source or ask your agent, and start early.

This is a general guide. Always confirm current requirements before booking flights.

5. Flights

  • Check a few dates and nearby airports. A one-day shift can change the fare.
  • Compare total journey time, not just the fare.
  • Look at baggage rules, especially on low-cost airlines.
  • Avoid connections shorter than two hours on international itineraries.
  • Check cancellation and change policies before you book.

6. Hotels and activities

Location often matters more than star rating. Book hotels close to the places you will visit or near good transport. Pre-book timed-entry attractions where required, and leave some days open.

7. Insurance and money

  • Buy travel insurance covering medical emergencies, trip cancellation and baggage. Check whether adventure activities are covered.
  • Carry a mix of a forex or international-use card, a debit or credit card and a small amount of local cash.
  • Check card charges, exchange rates and daily limits. UPI acceptance has expanded to a few countries but should not be your only payment method.
  • Overseas tour packages and foreign remittances may attract tax collected at source. Rates and thresholds have changed in recent budgets, so check with your agent or bank.
