Before you start planning Manali
Manali looks simple on a map, but three decisions shape the trip: how you get there, how many bases you use and which month you pick. Get those right and the rest is easy.
This guide walks through them in the order you will face them.
When to go to Manali
March to June is pleasant and the most popular. September to November has clearer skies and fewer people. December to February brings snow, which many travellers want, but also colder nights and road disruptions.
July and August are monsoon months. Landslides can close roads and the Delhi route becomes unreliable, so keep buffer days if you travel then.
| Best months | Suggested length |
|---|---|
| March to June, September to November; December to February for snow | 4 to 6 nights |
Getting there and getting around
By road from Chandigarh it is roughly 300 km and takes a full day of driving. From Delhi it is much longer, and most travellers take an overnight Volvo bus or drive with a stop. Bhuntar (Kullu) has a small airport about an hour from Manali, with limited flights.
Decide early whether you want to drive yourself. Mountain roads are slow and tiring; many visitors hire a driver for the whole trip.
Where to base yourself
For four nights, stay in Manali and do Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel as day trips. With six nights, add a second base in Naggar or the Parvati Valley so you are not repeating the same town.
Old Manali has cafes and a relaxed feel, while the Mall area is busy but convenient. Stay near whichever suits your plans.
What to book early
- Hotels in May, June and during the winter snow weeks.
- Rohtang Pass access, which depends on the season and a permit system.
- Paragliding, rafting and snow activities during peak weeks.
- A return seat if you rely on a Volvo bus.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Planning too many places in too few days, then spending the trip in a car.
- Assuming Rohtang is open and counting on it.
- Travelling without checking road and weather conditions in monsoon or winter.
- Driving at night on mountain roads when tired.
A simple route to start from
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Nights 1β2 | Manali: Hadimba Temple, Vashisht, Old Manali. |
| Night 3 | Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel, back to Manali or stay in Sissu. |
| Nights 4β5 | Naggar or Kasol for a quieter stay. |
Treat this as a starting outline and adjust it to your dates and pace.
