Before you start planning Himachal
Himachal Pradesh is a state of valleys, and the main planning question is which valleys to link. Roads connecting them can be long, and weather changes quickly.
Choose a circuit, not a list.
When to go to Himachal
March to June is popular, and September to November is clear and quiet. Winter brings snow in Manali and Shimla. July and August are monsoon months with landslide risk.
Spiti is usually open only in summer and early autumn.

Getting there and getting around
Chandigarh is the usual gateway. Shimla is about 115 km from Chandigarh, Manali about 300 km and Dharamshala about 250 km. Small airports at Bhuntar, Shimla and Gaggal have limited flights.
Plan road journeys in daylight and carry buffer time.
Where to base yourself
A classic circuit is Shimla for two nights, then Manali for three, with an optional Dharamshala leg. Spiti needs its own plan with at least five more days.
Do not try to include Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Spiti in a week.
What to book early
- Hotels in May, June and December.
- Adventure activities in peak weeks.
- Spiti permits and vehicles where required.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to cover the whole state in one trip.
- Driving long hours at night.
- Not checking road closures in monsoon and winter.
- Forgetting that valleys are separate drives, not neighbouring towns.
A simple route to start from
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Nights 1–2 | Shimla: Mall Road, Kufri, the Ridge. |
| Nights 3–5 | Manali: Solang and the Atal Tunnel. |
| Night 6 | Return towards Chandigarh. |
Treat this as a starting outline and adjust it to your dates and pace.
Frequently asked questions

+
Shimla is easier and closer, so many travellers do it first before moving north to Manali.
Is Himachal good in winter?
+
Yes, for snow lovers, but roads can close and nights are cold.
How many days for Himachal?
+
Six to eight nights for Shimla and Manali, more for Spiti or Dharamshala.
