Darjeeling from Kolkata: is it a weekend trip?
Darjeeling is a long way from Kolkata for a weekend, but it works with a Friday night departure and a Monday morning return. You get two full days in the hills.
The overnight train and the short flight to Bagdogra are the two practical options.
Getting there
Overnight train
Trains from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri run overnight; a taxi takes you on to Darjeeling in about three to four hours.
Flight to Bagdogra
A flight of about an hour, followed by a three to three and a half hour drive. It saves a night but costs more.
A weekend plan
| When | Plan |
|---|---|
| Friday night | Overnight train or a late flight. |
| Saturday | Tiger Hill sunrise, Batasia Loop, Ghum and the toy train joyride. |
| Sunday | Tea estate, the zoo and Mall Road, then an evening train or a flight back. |
Where to stay and what to skip
- Stay near Mall Road for walkability.
- Book Tiger Hill vehicles and toy train tickets in advance.
What you can skip on a short trip:
- Kalimpong, which needs another day.
