Before you start planning Meghalaya
Meghalaya is one of the most rewarding short trips in the Northeast, but the weather can reshape it. Heavy rain, slippery trails and long drives are part of the picture.
Plan around a base in Shillong, with day trips to Cherrapunji and the Dawki area, and add the root bridges if you are fit.
When to go to Meghalaya
October to April is drier, with clearer views and better water visibility at Dawki. The monsoon is spectacular for waterfalls but heavy rain can close roads and trails.
Check recent weather before you travel, even in the dry season.

Getting there and getting around
Guwahati is the main gateway, about three hours by road from Shillong. Shillong has a small airport with limited flights.
Taxis are the norm for sightseeing. Shared vehicles are cheaper but less flexible.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Shillong for two to three nights, then one night in Cherrapunji or Sohra to cut driving. Mawlynnong and Dawki can be done as a long day or as a night near Dawki.
Living root bridges, such as the double-decker bridge near Nongriat, need a long trek with many steps. They are not suitable for everyone.
What to book early
- Hotels in Cherrapunji and Dawki during October to December.
- Cab drivers for long days.
- Trail guides for root bridge treks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to do the root bridges and Dawki on the same day.
- Wearing unsuitable shoes on wet trails.
- Not allowing time for slow roads.
- Assuming the weather is the same as in Guwahati.
A simple route to start from

|---|---|
| Nights 1–2 | Shillong: Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, Don Bosco Museum. |
| Night 3 | Cherrapunji: waterfalls and caves. |
| Night 4 | Dawki and Mawlynnong. |
Treat this as a starting outline and adjust it to your dates and pace.
