Before you start planning Goa
Goa is easy to book and easy to get wrong. The same state hosts quiet villages and loud beach strips, and choosing the wrong area can feel like visiting a different place.
Start by deciding what kind of trip you want, and then pick the coast.
When to go to Goa
November to February is the dry, pleasant peak. Christmas and New Year are very busy and expensive.
June to September is the monsoon, which brings lower prices and greenery but fewer beach activities, and some shacks close.

Getting there and getting around
Goa has two airports, Dabolim in the south and Manohar International at Mopa in the north. Pick the one nearer your hotel to save a long taxi ride. Trains arrive at Madgaon in the south and Thivim in the north.
Taxi costs vary widely. Ask your hotel or agent about pre-paid or app-based options.
Where to base yourself
North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna) is lively, with water sports, markets and nightlife. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Benaulim) is quieter, with long beaches and resorts.
Do not try to base in both for a three-night trip.
What to book early
- Hotels for Christmas and New Year, many months ahead.
- Water-sports and cruise tickets in peak season.
- A rented scooter, if you plan one, with insurance and a licence.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Staying in the wrong area for your plans.
- Underestimating travel time between north and south.
- Renting a scooter without a valid licence and a helmet.
- Visiting during the monsoon expecting full beach activities.
A simple route to start from
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Night 1 | Check in, sunset at a beach. |
| Night 2 | North Goa: fort, markets, beach shacks. |
| Night 3 | Old Goa churches and Panjim's Latin Quarter. |
| Night 4 | South Goa beach day, if you have time. |
Treat this as a starting outline and adjust it to your dates and pace.
