Char Dham Yatra Packages: how this trip works
The Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand covers four Himalayan shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is demanding physically and logistically, and its seasons are short, so the plan needs to be built around the opening dates, your fitness and the weather.
Registration is mandatory, and a good package handles it for you. The route is usually done in the order Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath.
The yatra at a glance
| Stop | Suggested nights | Why it is on the route |
|---|---|---|
| Haridwar or Rishikesh (start) | 1 | The usual starting point and a place to complete registration. |
| Yamunotri | 1 | Reached by road to Janki Chatti, then a trek of roughly six km, or by pony or palanquin. |
| Gangotri | 1 | Road access to near the temple. |
| Kedarnath | 2 | A trek of around 16 km from Gaurikund, or a helicopter service from certain helipads. |
| Badrinath | 1 to 2 | Reached by road; Mana village and the Alaknanda nearby. |
Total: 9 to 12 nights. Adjust the split to your dates and pace.
Distances, access and darshan notes
Between the four
Roads in the high Himalaya are slow and prone to landslides. Driving hours are long, often six to nine hours a day.
Kedarnath access
Pony, palanquin and helicopter options exist, with limited slots and seasonal rules. Ask your agent to explain how it handles bookings.
Registration
Pilgrims need to register through the Uttarakhand tourism system. Confirm that your agent will arrange it.
Schedules, rules and fees change. Treat this as a planning guide and confirm current details with your agent.
When to go
The shrines open in late April or May, around Akshaya Tritiya, and close from about October to November. May to June and September to October are the usual windows, while July and August bring heavy rain and landslides. Opening and closing dates are announced yearly.
