Why go in the monsoon
The monsoon turns much of India green and fills waterfalls and lakes, and hotel prices are often lower. The catch is that rain also brings landslides, rough seas and closed attractions.
Some places are actually at their best at this time, including regions that sit in a rain shadow and stay dry.
Where it works
Kerala
Lush hills and backwaters, and the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatments. Heavy rain limits sightseeing.
Meghalaya
Waterfalls peak, but roads and treks can be difficult.
Western Ghats (Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Coorg)
Green hills and mist. Follow safety rules at waterfalls.
Udaipur
A good monsoon fills the lakes and the city looks its best.
Valley of Flowers (Uttarakhand)
Blooms from roughly July to September, reached by trek.
Ladakh and Spiti
These sit in a rain shadow and are comparatively dry in summer, though roads can be disrupted by landslides on approaches.
