If you are shortlisting Bali and Thailand, you are in good company. They are the two most popular value-for-money overseas holidays for Indian travellers, and on a brochure they look like the same trip: temples, beaches, spa days and a lot of good food.
On the ground, though, they behave very differently. Thailand is a trip you can slot into a long weekend. Bali is a trip you settle into. This guide skips the generic pros and cons and focuses on the things that actually change your decision: how long it takes to get there, how you will spend your days, what it costs once flights are included, and which months to avoid.
The short answer
- Choose Thailand if you have 4–5 nights, want a short flight, like a mix of city and beach, or are travelling with children or older parents.
- Choose Bali if you have 6 or more nights, want a quieter and more scenic holiday, and would enjoy a private-pool villa for a honeymoon or anniversary.
- If your dates fall in November to March, Thailand's weather is usually the safer bet. From April to October, Bali is at its best.
Bali vs Thailand at a glance
| Bali | Thailand | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical flight from India | Usually one connection; 9–12 hours door to door | Often nonstop to Bangkok; about 2.5–4.5 hours |
| Ideal length | 6–7 nights | 4–6 nights |
| Best months | April to October | November to February |
| Style of holiday | Villas, rice terraces, temples, surf, cafes | City, beaches, islands, shopping, nightlife |
| Entry for Indians | Visa on arrival plus a tourist levy | Short stays recently visa-exempt; digital arrival card required |
| Typical standard land cost per person | ₹40,000 – ₹65,000 | ₹30,000 – ₹50,000 |
| Best for | Honeymooners, slow travellers, wellness | First-timers, families, short trips, groups of friends |
Getting there changes the whole trip
Thailand's biggest practical advantage is flights. Bangkok and Phuket are served by many nonstop flights from Indian metros, and from eastern India the flight is about two and a half hours. That means you can leave in the evening, arrive at night and start your first full day properly rested.
Bali usually needs a connection through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Even a good itinerary costs most of a day each way. This is why a three-night Bali trip rarely makes sense and why we suggest six nights or more.
Compare total journey time, not just the fare. A cheaper Bali itinerary with a seven-hour layover can cost you a hotel night and a rough first day.
What the two trips cost
Once you add flights, Thailand is usually the cheaper trip, mainly because the flights are shorter and more frequent. On the ground, the two are closer than most people expect, and a private-pool villa in Bali can be better value than a comparable beach hotel in Phuket.
Using our indicative planning figures for a five-night trip per person, a standard Bali trip lands at about ₹93,500 and a standard Thailand trip at about ₹60,000, both including flights. For the full breakdown, see our detailed cost comparison.

Beaches and water
Thailand wins on island scenery. A day on a longtail boat around Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay or Krabi's limestone cliffs is one of the highlights of Southeast Asia, and the water is generally calm and clear in the dry season.
Bali's beaches are better known for sunsets, surf and beach clubs than for swimming. For calm snorkelling you usually take a boat to Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands. If you picture long swims and snorkelling, Thailand is the more natural fit.
Culture, nature and sightseeing
Bali is where culture and nature come together: temple ceremonies, rice terraces, waterfalls, a volcano sunrise and a strong tradition of dance and crafts. It rewards slow days and a driver who knows the back roads.
Thailand's sightseeing is more varied. You can move from Bangkok's palaces and markets to Pattaya's attractions and then to the islands, or north to Chiang Mai for temples and hills. It suits travellers who like to see a lot.
Which suits whom
| Traveller | Better pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Honeymoon | Bali (often) | Private villas, spa rituals and quieter evenings. Thailand's Phuket or Krabi is a good alternative for beach lovers. |
| Family with children | Thailand | Shorter flights, aquariums, easy food and simpler logistics. |
| Group of friends | Thailand | Nightlife, shopping and island hopping with plenty of packages. |
| Solo traveller | Either | Bali for yoga and cafes; Thailand for social hostels and easy movement. |
| Senior travellers | Thailand | Shorter journeys and compact itineraries. |
| Tight budget | Thailand | Lower flight and package costs. |
Month by month: when each shines
Their best seasons barely overlap, which makes the choice easy if your dates are fixed.
| Period | Bali | Thailand |
|---|---|---|
| Dec – Feb | Wet season; showers and humidity. Late December is expensive. | Best weather; busiest and most expensive around Christmas and New Year. |
| Mar – May | Drying out; April and May are excellent. | Hot, especially in April; good for beaches if you can take the heat. |
| Jun – Aug | Peak dry season and highest prices. | Rainy season; Andaman coast seas can be rough. |
| Sep – Nov | Still dry in September and October; good value. | Rain eases in November; high season begins. |

How to decide in five minutes
- Count your nights. Five or fewer points to Thailand; seven or more gives Bali room.
- Look at your travel month and match it to the dry season.
- Decide whether you want a base-and-explore holiday (Bali) or a route (Thailand).
- Check flights from your city for both, including total journey time.
- Ask agents to quote both. A single requirement on QuoteMyTrip can bring back Bali and Thailand plans side by side.
